McKay won had 14 consecutive winning seasons at USC, including finishing in first or second place in the PAC 10 thirteen times. He coached four Rose Bowl Championship and three national championship teams. He was selected college coach of the year in 1962 and 1972. Was hired as the Bucs first coach ever in 1975. Lead the team to 3 playoffs in four seasons (1979, 1981 & 1982) including a trip to the NFC Championship in 1979. The 1979 team was the fastest expansion team ever to reach a conference championship.

McKay is the father of Bucs' General Manager Rich McKay. The elder McKay passed away due kidney failure that was a complication of diabetes in 2001.
